NFSHS Serial Number Editing Tutorial

- By Justin Martin aka IH8COPS

The purpose of this tutorial is to teach people how to change serial numbers of cars in NFSHS to eliminate serial number conflicts. Please do not email me with questions regarding this tutorial, I do not respond to questions about problems in NFSHS. If this tutorial does not solve the problems you are having with NFSHS, try posting a message on the Total NFS Message Board

So you've just finished downloading the latest car for NFSHS, you followed the install directions exactly, but when you try to run the game, the game crashes and you get a error message similar to this one:

What you most likely have encountered is a serial number conflict. This is caused when two cars have the same serial number. Compounding the problem is that the only valid serial numbers are 0 through 49, which means the odds of the car you just downloaded having a serial number conflict with another downloaded car are very high.

So how do you change the car's serial number? Simple, download Vince Klortho's Serial Number Editor. Unzip the SNE to any directory on your hard drive, then double click on the file SerialNumber.exe. This will open a small program that looks like this.

As you can see in the pic above, in the main box you have a list of all the cars currently in your \Data\Cars and \SaveData folders. The numbers to the left of each car is that car's serial number. In the lower right corner, there is a box that has "Matches" writen to the left of it. In the pic above, there are no serial number conflicts, so the Matches box displays 0.

However, in this pic, there is a serial number conflict, which caused a error message when NFSHS tried to run. The Matches box displays a 1, indicating that there is one serial number conflict. As you can see in the pic, there are two cars with the serial number 7. Cars that have identical serial numbers have a asterisk to the left of the serial number.

So how do I change the serial number? Simple, click on one of the cars that has a serial number conflict, which will highlight the car's name. Then click on the "Edit" button in the lower right corner. This will open a new box, as seen in the pic above. In the box labeled "New S/N", type in a new serial number. In the pic, I have typed in "8", because serial number 8 is not being used. Remember, serial numbers 0 through 49 are the only ones that will work, anything else will cause the game to crash. Also, serial number 33 is used by the Knockout truck, even if you delete it, do not use serial number 33. Click on the "OK" button, and you are done. Now NFSHS should run without any serial number conflicts.
