Released in May 1999, NFS High Stakes (aka NFS 4) is loosely based upon NFS3. It features new cars, eleven additional tracks, a career mode, and an expanded Hot Pursuit mode. The car physics model is an improvement over NFS3, though still very arcadish. The cars now feature 3D interiors, working convertible tops, transparent windows and animated drivers.

The career mode is a new addition to the NFS series, allowing you to compete in a set series of races for money and for your opponent's cars. Also new is the ability to upgrade cars, though you are unfortunently limited to three upgrade packages which are only available in the career mode.
