Released initally in 1995 for the ill-fated 3DO game console, The Need For Speed was the first version of EA's highly successful Need For Speed series. Described as "the only reason to own a 3DO", it was quickly ported to the PC when the 3DO went under. Developed with support from Road & Track, TNFS featured a great physics model, eight exotic sports cars, three point-to-point tracks, five closed circuit tracks, and best of all, cops that gave tickets and arrested repeat offenders.
TNFS Special Edition (SE) was released in 1996, and was basically a graphics update of TNFS. It had full 32 bit Windows 95 support, and updated game music. It also had one additional track, Transtropolis.
